One of the most striking realisations upon finding yourself relocated to the inner walls of a Tuscan town such a Prato, is the way in which the archaic architecture competes with modernisation. Here, the coexistence of ancient and contemporary materials sparks a dialogue of preservation and adaptation that’s hard to go unnoticed. Simply wandering through the cobblestone streets, one is transported back in time, which makes the jolt back to reality even more jarring when a car attempts to manoeurve through the narrow streets that were evidently not designed for modern modes of transportation. These juxtaposed elements highlight the city’s remarkable ability to maintain its historical heritage while evolving to accomodate the demands of modern life. It begs the question: to what extent can we continue to preserve Prato’s architecture so that it keeps its historical integrity but is progressive enough that it can continue to adapt and stay relevant in a rapidly advancing world?
